MATERIAL SELF:REFLECTION

A person’s possessions including the body, family, clothes, money, house, car, and other tangible objects make up his or her material self.

I think it is through material things that we are able to tell someone’s social status. Like, for example, my family, we have our own house that is fully furnished, we all have gadgets like smartphones and other branded appliances so therefore we are considered to be at the middle-class sector of the society. My parents were able to buy the house, me and my sister, ever since preschool, were studying at a private academic institutions, and from those truths people may say that my parents are successful in life. I, personally, have noticed how material things contribute to one’s self because I also experience it, first hand, and from here MATERIALISM comes into the picture.

Materialism is the importance that people give to material possessions over intangible values. A materialistic person is excessively concerned with the acquisition of material possessions.

It is easy for me to judge people that are evidently active in social media. Like I feel that they are all trying so hard to fit in with all of the trends set by famous personalities, like social influencers, local and international. At first I tried being active in social media, I was ecstatic and super excited. I was discovering new things, from technologies, make up, music, name it, I’ve probably seen it at some point. The reason that made me stop using social media for a second was that I’ve seen myself trying so hard to look, not only decent or neat, but more of an extravagant so that the world might be pleased. Then I thought to myself, why am I doing this, for what purpose is this whole ordeal for, and the realization hit me, I was trying to become someone that wasn’t really me. I remember this one time, I took a photo of my lunch and it took me forever, from plating, camera angle, to the filter that fits my taste, before I was able to take a bite. I also started to become a compulsive buyer. Buying this things that are trending, high end brands that are not really valuable, but I was blinded by the society and I thought I needed it but I don’t. I know that, me being “materialistic”, is probably not the worst case ever but it didn’t do me good. So, my advice to myself, that I’m about to share you is that there is no human being in this world that is not in anyway sentimental to anything. It’s just our nature to want things but we should be aware that material things does not make our SELF entirely and that there are other important aspects that make us whole aside from material things.
